Who Is Sebastian Masuda? The Pioneer of KAWAII Culture 🌈

Sebastian Masuda is an artist and art director who opened the iconic Harajuku shop “6%DOKIDOKI” in 1995, and has since brought Japan’s pop culture phenomenon “KAWAII” to the world ✨ From producing KAWAII MONSTER LAND to major international exhibitions, he’s been the driving force behind elevating kawaii into a legitimate art form.

This exhibition marks the 30th anniversary of 6%DOKIDOKI and his first large-scale solo show in five years. Masuda himself says: “KAWAII is your own tiny universe where no one can interfere. There are as many versions of KAWAII as there are people.”

A Tour Through All 7 “KAWAII Hells” — The Highlights 🔥

This exhibition interprets “KAWAII” as a movement of the spirit — oscillating between heaven and hell. Every room inside is named “〇〇 Hell,” forming seven distinct areas. When kawaii reaches its absolute peak… it becomes hell 🔥 Moving through every room is a full-on immersive “kawaii hell pilgrimage” 🌀
Here are our top 3 must-see areas ✨

Sweets Hell|An Explosion of Pop the Moment You Walk In 👀✨

It’s like someone dumped a toy box and a candy box together at the same time! The densely packed, colorful packaging makes your heart go absolutely feral 🍭💕

The theme? “Childhood landscapes and first impulses” 🔥✨
When Sebastian was little, his parents were busy and he’d pass time in the local shopping arcade — and it was the colorful candy packaging at the dagashi shop that sparked something in him. He says those colors are still the “warm fuzzy feeling” that drives him to this day 🥺💖 Such a beautiful origin story — honestly a little emotional 💧✨

Plushie Hell|Bring Your Own Stuffed Animal for This One 🧸

Welcome to Room 2: Plushie Hell 🚪🔥 — also nicknamed “Hell Plushies” by fans 👻💕

Colorful pom-pom-covered bears and bunnies piled sky-high — incredibly KAWAII at first glance 🌈✨ But look closer, and you’ll find countless disassembled plush toys packed together in a swirling mass — a space that feels just a little unhinged 🌀⚡️

It blows straight past the surface-level image of “plushies = cute things 🎀” and expresses the madness lurking beneath the surface of adorableness 🤯💖 Inside all that fluffiness is Masuda’s personal conflict — the discomfort of being an adult who loves stuffed animals, and his pull toward the mischievous “jaki” demon figures over proper Buddhist statues. That dark-pop sensibility is packed into every seam 😈✨

Colorful Rebellion -Seventh Nightmare-|Like Falling Inside a Kaleidoscope ✨🧸

Room #6: Colorful Rebellion -Seventh Nightmare- 💖
Every single wall is completely covered in colorful toys, plushies, and glittering parts — it’s like diving headfirst into a kaleidoscope! A total flood of KAWAII that’ll make your eyes spin 🌀✨

This piece was actually first exhibited in 2014 at Kianga Ellis Projects in Chelsea, New York 🗽🍎 Its roots trace back to 2013, when Masuda was alone in an old New York motel, lying awake night after night asking himself: “What even is KAWAII?” 🛏️💭

And here’s the best part ✨ — you can actually lie down on the white bed in the center of the room 🛏️💕 Stretch out and look around, and you might just find yourself sinking into that labyrinthine late-night headspace that Masuda experienced in New York 💭✨

The Other Rooms Are All Incredible Too 🌟

“White Hell,” “Materials Hell,” “Words Hell” — each room is a completely different world. Everything on display is so kawaii that you’ll want to reach out and touch it… but please don’t — that’s basic gallery etiquette 🙅 Some areas also have steps and uneven flooring, so comfortable sneakers are recommended 👟

Note: some installations require climbing stairs!
